SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team dropped both games of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader to Cal State San Bernardino, Sunday at CSUSM Softball Field. The Cougars fell by scores of 10-1 in five innings and 2-0. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played on Feb. 18, but was postponed due to weather.
CSUSM drops to 7-18 overall and 6-14 in conference play. The Coyotes improve to 17-11 overall and 12-8 in the CCAA.
The Cougars will travel to Cal State Monterey Bay for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday, March 24-25. Action on Friday will start at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
Game One - Cal State San Bernardino 10, Cal State San Marcos 1 (5 inn.)
CSUSB generated 14 hits as CSUSM fell by a score of 10-1 in five innings. Coyote pitcher Cassandra Williams (10-6) earned the win as she threw all five frames and gave up one run. Senior pitcher
Amanda Horbasch pitched the first 1.1 innings and gave up three runs (two earned). Freshman
Karen Roman, who started the game at first base, came in relief for the next 3.2 innings. Senior infielder
Holly Fauria compiled two hits and the only RBI for the Cougars. Freshman outfielder
Sara Whelehon had one hit and one run.
CSUSB scored three runs in the top of the second. Monica Maddox hit a RBI single and Jessica Brown was walked with the bases loaded. The third run of the frame scored due to a CSUSM error. The Coyotes took a 6-0 lead with a Morgan Ratliff three-run homer in the top of the third.
CSUSB added four more runs in the fifth inning to push its lead to 10-0. The Cougars avoided a shutout with a run in the bottom of the frame thanks to Fauria's RBI single, but could not get enough runs to continue the game.
Game Two - Cal State San Bernardino 2, Cal State San Marcos 0
CSUSM could not generate anything offensively and was defeated by CSUSB by a score of 2-0. Coyote pitcher Amanda Ramirez threw a complete game shutout with four strikeouts. Senior pitcher
Ashley Dagenais pitched all seven innings for the Cougars, giving up two runs and striking out two.
CSUSB scored right away in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Kaylee Gemmell. The Coyotes got their second run in the fifth inning as Brown drew a walk with the bases loaded. CSUSM amassed only three hits, one each from junior outfielder
