SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos softball team took two losses against Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader, Friday at CSUSM Softball Field. The Cougars could only muster one run on the day and fell by scores of 7-0 and 4-1.
The Cougars drop to 7-14 overall and 6-10 in conference play. The Seawolves improve to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in the CCAA.
The two teams will play another doubleheader to close out the four-game series on Saturday, March 18 starting at 11 a.m.
Game One - Sonoma State 7, Cal State San Marcos 0
CSUSM kept SSU off of the scoreboard until the fourth inning and fell, 7-0. The Cougars had five hits while the Seawolves compiled 12. SSU pitcher Brielle Vidmar (7-2) collected the win, throwing all seven innings with four strikeouts. Senior pitcher
Amanda Horbasch (4-3) took the loss, throwing 4.2 innings, giving up three runs (one earned). Freshman pitcher
Karen Roman, who started at first base, came in relief and threw the last 2.1 innings.
The Seawolves scored in the top of the fourth. With two outs and runners on first and second, SSU's Jenn Amaral forced a CSUSM error to score Jordann White. The Seawolves added two more in the fifth inning with RBI hits from Jenny Collazo and White.
SSU made it a 4-0 game in the top of the sixth with a single from Alex Flores to score Mykala Tokunaga. The Seawolves topped it off by adding three insurance runs in the seventh that included a two-run homer from Collazo.
Game Two - Sonoma State 4, Cal State San Marcos 1
With the game even at 1-1, SSU scored one run in each of the last three innings to defeat CSUSM 4-1. Senior pitcher
Ashley Dagenais (1-4) pitched all seven innings for the Cougars and gave up four runs (three earned), and struck out two. Junior catcher
Heather Rygg had two hits and the only RBI for CSUSM. The Seawolves' Teresa Danenberg (4-2) got the win with one earned run and two strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
SSU got on the scoreboard first. In the top of the fourth, Flores laid down a sacrifice bunt that plated Amaral. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the inning as senior outfielder
Breanna Stiles singled, stole second and came home on a double by junior catcher
Heather Rygg to tie it up at 1-1.
The Seawolves plated one run in each of the last three innings thanks to a CSUSM fielding error in the fifth, an RBI single from Alison Strycula in the sixth and a homer from White in the seventh.
