Cougars Split Doubleheader, Series at San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO - The Cal State San Marcos softball team split a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader against San Francisco State, Saturday at SFSU Softball Field. The Cougars won game one by a score of 3-2 and fell in extra innings in the second game, 4-3.

The Cougars are now 7-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play. The Gators are 6-12 overall and 5-11 in the CCAA.

CSUSM will host Sonoma State in a four-game conference series next week. The two teams will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, March 17-18. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m. and on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Game One - Cal State San Marcos 3, San Francisco State 2
CSUSM was able to fend off a late SFSU attack and win 3-2. Senior pitcher Amanda Horbasch threw all seven innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs given up. Freshman infielder Gabriela Arizaga compiled two hits, one run and two RBI. Senior outfielder Breanna Stiles had two hits and one run.

The Cougars got on the board in the third as Arizaga put down a sacrifice bunt that brought in senior outfielder Lindsay Cerulle. CSUSM added two more to extend the lead to 3-0. Stiles singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third on a passed ball. Arizaga then doubled to score Stiles. A Callais single in the next at bat plated Arizaga.

The Gators avoided a shutout with a two-run homer from Mallory Cleveland in the bottom of the seventh. Horbasch and the Cougar defense then got the necessary three outs to end the game.

Game Two - San Francisco State 4, Cal State San Marcos 3 (8 innings)
CSUSM came back from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh, but the Cougars eventually fell to SFSU in the eighth inning, 4-3. Arizaga had one hit and two RBI. Stiles compiled one hit and one RBI.

The Gators scored one in the first with an RBI single from Sara Higa. SFSU added two more in the bottom of the second thanks to two Cougar errors.

CSUSM did not get on the scoreboard until two outs in the seventh inning. Freshman infielder Mackenzie Fannin drew a walk, junior outfielder Sara Langdon singled and Cerulle got on with a walk to load the bases. Stiles then hit an RBI single up the middle to bring in Fannin for the first score. Arizaga doubled in the next at bat and plated Langdon and Cerulle to even the score.

The Gators walked off the Cougars in the bottom of the seventh inning. With runners on first and second, Madison Collins hit an RBI single to end the game.
