SAN FRANCISCO - The Cal State San Marcos softball team won the second game of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader against San Francisco State by a final score of 2-1, Friday at SFSU Softball Field. The Cougars fell to the Gators in the first game 6-1 for the doubleheader split.
CSUSM improves to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in conference play. SFSU is now 5-13 overall and 4-10 in the CCAA.
The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday, March 11 with a two games starting at 11 a.m.
Game One - San Francisco State 6, Cal State San Marcos 1
CSUSM did not get on the scoreboard until the seventh and fell to SFSU 6-1. Junior outfielder

Holly Fauria each compiled two hits. Fauria had the lone RBI of the game for the Cougars. Senior pitcher
Ashley Dagenais (1-4) took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up five earned runs and striking out three. Gator pitcher Megan Clark threw all seven innings with seven strikeouts.
SFSU got its first run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly Gabby Reta. A two-run homer by Sara Higa in the fourth inning gave the Gators a 3-0 lead.
SFSU got three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-0 advantage. Celeste Adriano brought home two with a single and Delanie Chrisman plated another with a hit in the following at bat.
CSUSM tried to make a comeback in the seventh, but could only muster one run. Freshman infielder
Abby Callais drew a walk and junior catcher
Heather Rygg doubled to get two on base. Fauria then hit an RBI single to bring in Callais for the lone Cougar score of the contest.
Game Two - Cal State San Marcos 2, San Francisco State 1
CSUSM scored two runs aided by two SFSU errors in the sixth inning to win, 2-1. Freshman infielder
Gabriela Arizaga compiled two hits and one run. Senior pitcher
Amanda Horbasch went seven innings, gave up one run and struck out seven.
The Gators took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Higa launched a solo home run, her second of the day.
The Cougars did not score until the sixth inning. Senior outfielder
Breanna Stiles reached on an error and advanced to third on an Arizaga double. With two outs, freshman outfielder
Sara Whelehon forced an SFSU error as Arizaga and Stiles came home. CSUSM held onto its one-run advantage in the next two frames to prevail.
