Cougars Close Out Season at Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday, Cal State L.A. Saturday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team will conclude the 2016-17 season with two road matchups. The Cougars will play Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday. Both games are set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
  • CSUSM is currently fifth in the CCAA standings with a 12-6 conference record. The Cougars are 18-8 overall. 
  • CSUSM took down Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, 77-64. The Cougars shot 51.7 percent from the floor. Joe Boyd collected his 13th double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Spiers scored a game-high 23 points. 
  • CSUSM defeated Cal State East Bay on Saturday, 70-63, in a game that featured nine ties and 11 lead changes. Ethan Alvano led the Cougars with 27 points with four assists. Trailing 58-56 with three minutes left, CSUSM went on a 7-0 run to put the Pioneers away. 
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA in scoring offense, averaging 79.8 points per game. In addition, the Cougars lead the conference in field goal percentage at .485 and three-point field goal percentage at .439.
  • Junior forward Joe Boyd leads the conference in rebounding at 10.3 per game. He is first in field goal percentage, nailing 57.2 percent (155-271) of his shots. 
  • Senior guard Tyson Kygar ranks first in the CCAA with a .484 three-point field goal percentage. He leads the CCAA with 2.9 treys per game. 
  • Junior guard Josh Spiers is second in the conference with a .466 three-point field goal percentage and fourth in 3-pointers made with 2.6 per game. 
  • Junior guard Ethan Alvano leads the CCAA in scoring at 17.2 points per game. Alvano is also the conference leader in assists at 5.6 per game and is second in steals at 2.3 per game.

  • The Cougars are 8-4 in their brand new home, The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM was 47-9 (.839) from 2011-16 when the Cougars called MiraCosta College "home".

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ BREAKDOWN
  • Cal State Dominguez Hills is sixth in the CCAA with a 9-9 conference record. The Toros are 13-11 overall. 
  • Vincent Golson is fourth in the CCAA in scoring at 16.2 points per game. 
  • Justin Sadler and Darian Tanner are the other CSUDH players averaging double figures at 13.9 and 11.3 points per game.  
  • CSUSM is 2-1 all-time against the Toros. The Cougars fell to CSUDH 81-71 at home earlier this season. 
  • Toro head coach Steve Becker is in his third season. 

CAL STATE L.A. BREAKDOWN
  • Cal State L.A. is eighth in the conference standings with an 8-11 CCAA record. The Golden Eagles are 13-15 overall. 
  • Travis Hammonds and Jordan Wilson are fifth and seventh in the CCAA in scoring at 16.2 and 14.8 points per game, respectively. 
  • The Cougars are 1-1 all-time against CSULA. CSUSM narrowly defeated the Golden Eagles 73-71 at home earlier this season. 
  • Cal State L.A. is coached by Jim Saia, who previously spent the last five seasons as the head coach of Cal State San Marcos. He amassed a record of 119-37 (.763) during his tenure at the helm of the Cougars' men's basketball program. 

COACH FOSTER FILE
B.J. Foster was named interim head men's basketball coach in the summer of 2016 after three years as the head assistant (2013-16). Foster is 18-8 in his career as a interim head coach.
