Cougars Host Final Home Games Against Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday, Cal State East Bay Saturday for Senior Night

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Only two home contests are left on the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team's schedule this season. The Cougars will host two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponents in Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, Feb. 16 and Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Feb. 18 for Senior Night. CSUSM will honor its five seniors, Dayton Boddie, Novian Cherry, Jordan Jefferson, Devin Koeplin and Tyson Kygar, prior to Saturday's game.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
  • CSUSM is currently fifth in the CCAA standings with a 10-6 conference record. The Cougars are 16-8 overall. 
  • CSUSM defeated Stanislaus State, 94-76, thanks to 14 made 3-pointers. Junior guard Ethan Alvano tied a school record for most assists in a game with 14. 
  • The Cougars, despite having their lowest scoring output of the season, took down Chico State, 59-58. Alvano nailed an off-balance fadeaway shot from 25-feet out for three points and the win with 2.1 seconds remaining. 
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA in scoring offense, averaging 80.3 points per game. In addition, the Cougars lead the conference in field goal percentage at .486 and three-point field goal percentage at .443.
  • Junior forward Joe Boyd leads the conference in rebounding at 10.4 per game. He is second in field goal percentage, nailing 57.7 percent (142-246) of his shots. 
  • Senior guard Tyson Kygar ranks first in the CCAA with a .503 three-point field goal percentage. He leads the CCAA with 3.0 treys per game. 
  • Junior guard Josh Spiers is third in the conference with a .459 three-point field goal percentage and third in 3-pointers made with 2.6 per game. 
  • Junior guard Ethan Alvano leads the CCAA in scoring at 17.1 points per game. Alvano is also the conference leader in assists at 5.7 per game and is second in steals at 2.2 per game.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
  • The Cougars are 8-4 in their brand new home, The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM was 47-9 (.839) from 2011-16 when the Cougars called MiraCosta College "home".

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY BREAKDOWN
  • Cal State Monterey Bay is last in CCAA standings with a 1-16 conference record, 3-20 overall. The Otters are on a 11-game losing streak. 
  • Kevin Warren and Shawn Smith lead CSUMB in scoring at 12.3 and 11.4 points per game. 
  • CSUSM is 2-1 all-time against the Otters. The Cougars defeated CSUMB on the road earlier this season, 77-66. 
  • CSUMB is led by ninth year head coach Rob Bishop. 

CAL STATE EAST BAY BREAKDOWN
  • Cal State East Bay is 11th in the conference standings with a 5-12 conference record with a 12-13 overall record. The Pioneers are on a six-game losing streak. 
  • Micah Dunhour is fourth in the CCAA in scoring at 16.0 points per game. Jalen Richard is seventh averaging 15.0 points per game. 
  • Juwan Anderson is averaging 5.0 assists per game, good for second in the CCAA. 
  • The Cougars are 3-0 all-time against CSUEB. CSUSM narrowly defeated the Pioneers 109-108 in a double overtime game at Hayward in early January. 
  • Head coach Gus Argenal is in his fourth year at CSUEB. 

COACH FOSTER FILE
B.J. Foster was named interim head men's basketball coach in the summer of 2016 after three years as the head assistant (2013-16). Foster is 16-8 in his career as a interim head coach.
