SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Despite senior guard
Ethan Alvano's 42-point school-record performance, the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team fell 103-86 to Concordia Irvine at the CCAA/PacWest Conference Challenge on Saturday night.
The Eagles started hot on offense and remained throughout the night. As a team, they shot 39-of-62 (62.9 percent) from the field and 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) from distance. Five Eagles finished in double-digits scoring.
CSUSM drops to 1-1 on the season while the Eagles improve to 3-1 following the win. CUI went went 2-0 on the weekend after taking down No. 7 Chico State last night.
Alvano went 15-of-21 from the field including 7-of-10 from behind the arc. Defensively, he also tallied three steals while also dishing out five assists. He scored 21 points in the final 11 minutes of the second half.
For the game, CSUSM shot 51 percent from the field (26-of-51) while hitting 11 three-pointers and finishing at 50 percent (11-of-22) for the game. The Cougars dominated the free-throw battle going 23-of-26 (88.5 percent) while CUI went just 13-of-22 (59.1 percent).
CUI's JT Roach went 7-of-9 from the field including five three pointers in addition to six assists in the game.
Recording his first double-double of the season, senior
Joe Boyd, finished with 12 rebounds and 14 points. He went 4-of-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Three Cougars finished in double figures in scoring including classmate
Josh Spiers with 10 points.
The Eagles won the rebound battle, 32-26, for the game including eight offensive boards.
CSUSM will continue its nonconference schedule taking on West Coast Baptist at home on Thursday Nov. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
