SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday, Oct. 8 at The Cage.
SF State's Vanessa Penuna capitalized on a costly CSUSM foul and scored a penalty kick goal in the 67th minute for what proved to be the game-winner for the Gators. It was the second goal of the season for Penuna.
CSUSM (6-6, 4-4 CCAA) held a 14-10 advantage in shots but both teams were even with five shots on goal. SFSU (8-3-1, 3-2-1 CCAA) edged the Cougars 5-4 in the saves battle.
The Cougars were aggressive early on the attack. Senior
Meghan Randig and sophomore
Lauren Perry very nearly put CSUSM on the board first with great early chances. Randig banged a ball off the crossbar in the 15th minute while Perry forced a great save from the Gators goalkeeper, Christina Holguin in the 23rd minute.
The lone goal of the match came after Cougars goalkeeper, sophomore
Bailey Cockrill was forced out of the net to challenge a ball at the top of the box and was whistled for the foul on the challenge. Penuna lined up and beat Cockrill, finishing to the lower right corner.
Penuna led the attack for SFSU finishing with three total shots while Holguin records her sixth clean sheet of the season in net for the Gators.
Randig tallied five total shots, leading the way for CSUSM while junior
Amy Wilson and Perry each finished with two total shots on goal.
CSUSM will head on the road to take on CCAA opponent Sonoma State on Friday, Oct. 13. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
