Cougars Dominate Cal State Dominguez Hills

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Junior outside hitter Courtney Hulla and sophomore middle blocker Maddy Newcombe led all hitters with 12 kills each as Cal State San Marcos volleyball team swept Cal State Dominguez Hills in its midweek California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match at The Sports Center. Final scores were 25-18, 25-17 and 25-18.
 
The Cougars (7-7, 4-2 CCAA) were firing on all cylinders, defeating the Toros (6-8, 2-3 CCAA) in every category including a 7-to-1 block ratio. Junior Faith Fortuné tallied four total blocks including two solo blocks.
 
Newcombe recorded a .733 clip, collecting her 12 kills on 15 attempts and only made one error. Hulla finished with a .313 attack percentage, taking 32 attempts and collecting only two errors. Sophomore setter Aleese Wheaton dished out 22 assists in addition to her game-high 14 digs. Freshman libero Grecia Cordero-Barr and junior defensive specialist Haley Montgomery chipped in 13 and 10 digs, respectively, on the night.
 
The Cougars dominated in each of the sets, never trailing once on Tuesday night. In the third set, CSUSM led by as much as 18-10 but the Toros closed the gap to 22-17. Back-to-Back kills by sophomore Taylor Dixon and Newcombe clinched the match victory.
 
CSUDH was led by Claire Autry who recorded eight kills. Tati Yandall added seven kills.
 
CSUSM held CSUDH to a .109 clip while handing the Toros their first sweep of the 2017 season.
 
The Cougars hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Arcata to take on the Humboldt State Lumberjacks. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
