Cougars Sweep Cal State Monterey Bay

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team collected its fourth October sweep, taking down visiting Cal State Monterey Bay 25-20, 25-23 and 25-22 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Saturday night at The Sports Center.

The Cougars improve to 13-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play while the Otters drop to 11-11 on the season, 5-9 CCAA.

Sophomore outside hitter Madi Anderson matched her season-high of 16 kills and finished with a .421 attack percentage. Sophomore middle blocker Maddy Newcombe chipped in nine kills and a .318 clip. Junior setter/outside hitter Lauren Lee added 24 assists, eight digs and six kills.

Down 9-2 in the first set, the Cougars rallied back to finish on a five-point run to clinch the opening set, 25-20.

A late run by the Otters in the second set threatened the Cougars, but CSUSM halted it with a kill by freshman Micah Hébert followed by a block by junior middle blocker Faith Fortuné and Lee. An Anderson kill gave CSUSM a 2-0 set lead heading into the 10-minute break.

The third set began with nine ties before CSUSM took a 17-15 lead on an Anderson kill. CSUSM would not relinquish the lead again, snagging a 25-22 victory.

CSUMB's Maddy Underwood notched a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs in the match.

The Cougars are back in action next Saturday when they host crosstown rival UC San Diego. The first 200 fans will receive a free CSUSM Athletics t-shirt.
