SAN MARCOS, Calif – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision to UC San Diego in a nonconference match on Friday at The Cage. Prior to the match, seniors
JJ Castillo and
Victor Gonzalez were recognized for their final home matches in a Cougar uniform.
Brett Jones hit the game-winner in the 106th minute after the Cougars came up with a huge team save. Jones happen to be on the other end of a well-placed cross on the right side from Malik Bashti. He had his first shot blocked on a team save credited to
David Martin for what seemed a lucky break for CSUSM and a game saving play, but not for long, Jones got his own rebound and quickly finished as it just snuck past a packed box.
CSUSM falls to 2-10-2 with the loss as UCSD improves to 9-1-4 overall.
The Cougars outshot the Tritons, 11-9, but were edge 8-4 in shots on goal. The highly contested match featured a combined 33 fouls.
David Martin got the scoring started putting the Cougars ahead, 1-0, in the eighth minute of the match. The goal came off a free kick that was directed towards freshman
Spencer Griffith who flicked it ahead and was put away by Martin. Two unanswered goals scored by Jones and Steven Ortiz for UCSD gave the Tritons the lead, 2-1, heading into halftime.
Senior
Victor Gonzalez found the equalizer for CSUSM in the 71st minute on a beautiful give and go with sophomore
Fabian Jacobo who left a great ball off a back heel and Gonzalez did the rest. He ripped a ball from just outside the left corner of the 18 and was able to sneak it just past the outstretched goalkeeper for his team leading fourth goal of the season. UCSD would prevail on the Jones goal in double overtime.
This concludes the 2017 home schedule for CSUSM but they still have two matches remaining on the road. They will first head on the road to take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, Oct. 26 at Otter Sports Complex in Seaside. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
