ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team opened the scoring, but could not hold off Humboldt State in a 2-1 overtime loss Sunday in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at College Creek Field.
Senior
Victor Gonzalez put the Cougars on the board first with a goal in the ninth minute as he headed a ball to the back of the net from inside the box on an assist by junior
Bryan Morrison. It was the third goal of the season for Gonzalez and first assist of the year for Morrison. A costly CSUSM own goal in the 13th minute was the equalizer for the Lumberjacks. Francisco Calderon scored the game-winner for HSU in the 102nd minute as he finished to the right side for his fifth goal of the year.
CSUSM drops to 2-9-2 overall and 0-8-1 in CCAA play. HSU improves to 7-6, 4-5 CCAA.
"Scoring goals continues to be our problem." Said head coach
Ron Pulvers. "Today there was no shortage of chances yet come up with only one goal. We have to be much more lethal in the box plain and simple."
The Cougars outshot the Lumberjacks, 24-18, for the match as well as edging HSU, 11-7, in the corner kick battle.
Freshman
Jacob Cuccia led the Cougars with seven total shots while Morrison finished with six shots and two on frame. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Franklin totaled seven saves for the match.
CSUSM returns home on Friday, Oct. 20 to take on crosstown rival UC San Diego at The Cage. The team will also recognize the two seniors on senior day prior to the start of the match. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
