SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort, but fell short in a 2-1 overtime loss to Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon in The Cage.
The Cougars outshot the Broncos 10-8 and forced two saves out of CPP's Ricki Ives. Daisy Duran collected a loose ball well outside the 18-yard box, turned and was able to finish on an uncontested goal to the upper left corner just under the crossbar for the game-winner in the first period of extra time.
The Cougars drop to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in CCAA play. CPP improves to 8-2-1, 4-1-1 CCAA.
Down 1-0 late in the match, CSUSM found the equalizer following a costly Bronco penalty inside the box. Senior
Kayla Anderson was called upon to take the PK for CSUSM and buried it to the bottom right corner to tie the match at 1-1 in the 87th minute. It was the second goal of the year for Anderson.
In overtime, CSUSM goalkeeper
Bailey Cockrill got pulled out of position trying to make a play on a loose ball, popping right up following the first save she tried to retreat back to cover the net in time but in a desperation effort was forced to put her hands up and make a game saving block for the time being. Cockrill would make the save but ultimately was outside the box and called for the penalty, resulting in a red card for CSUSM. The Cougars would then be forced to play a player down and CPP would make them pay.
Junior
Elizabeth Maass and sophomore
Lauren Perry led the Cougars with two shots each. CSUSM edged CPP in the corner kick battle, 5-3.
The Cougars will travel on the road to take on CCAA opponent UC San Diego on Wednesday, Oct. 4 in La Jolla. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
