Road Matchups Against Cal State East Bay, Cal State Monterey Bay On Tap for CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team will play two road games against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foes this week. The Cougars will take on Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. CSUSM will then have a day off before taking on Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3:30 p.m.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
  • CSUSM could not keep Cal State Dominguez Hills off the glass and fell 81-71 last Thursday. The Cougars were outrebounded 45-27, including 20-8 on the offensive end. 
  • CSUSM snapped a two-game losing streak with a 73-71 win over Cal State L.A. The Cougars shot 48.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. Four players scored in double figures as Tyson Kygar, Josh Spiers, Ethan Alvano and Brian Wright had 18, 13, 12 and 12 per game. 
  • CSUSM is third in the conference in scoring offense, averaging 76.9 points per game. The Cougars lead the CCAA in field goal and  three-point percentage at 49.1 percent (361-735) and 43.8 percent (106-242), respectively. 
  • Junior forward Joe Boyd leads the conference in rebounding at 10.5 per game. He is second in field goal percentage, nailing 59.5 percent (72-121) of his shots. 
  • Senior guard Tyson Kygar ranks second in the conference with a .521 3-point field goal percentage. He leads the CCAA with 2.9 treys per game. 
  • Junior guard Ethan Alvano ranks fourth in the CCAA in scoring at 15.5 points per game. Alvano is fifth in the conference in assists, averaging 4.2 per game.

  • Cal State East Bay is tied with CSUSM in the CCAA standings with a 3-3 conference record. 
  • Micah Dunhour leads the Pioneers and is second in the CCAA in scoring at 16.2 points per game to go along with 6.9 rebounds. 
  • Jalen Richard and Druce Asah also put up double digit points with 13.4 and 13.2 points per game, respectively. 
  • Cal State East Bay head coach Gus Argenal is in fourth year at the helm.

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY BREAKDOWN
  • Cal State Monterey Bay is last in the CCAA standings with a 1-5 conference record.
  • Kevin Warren, Shawn Smith and Jahvon Johnson average 12.6, 11.4 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. 
  • Julien Ducree and Gregg Polosky are the top rebounders for the Pioneers at 7.1 and 6.7 rebounds per game, respectively. 
  • Rob Bishop is in his ninth season as Cal State Monterey Bay's head coach. 

COACH FOSTER FILE
B.J. Foster was named interim head men's basketball coach in the summer of 2016 after three years as the head assistant (2013-16). Foster is 8-5 in his career as a interim head coach.
