SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Down by one point entering the fourth quarter, the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team outscored San Francisco State 22-13 in the final 10 minutes to earn a 73-65 win in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Thursday night at The Sports Center.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 10-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play. The Gators fall to 2-17 overall and remain winless in CCAA competition at 0-12.
CSUSM shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-13) from behind the arc and 69.6 percent (16-23) from the free throw line. SF State went 35.4 percent (23-65) on field goals, 36.8 percent (7-19) on 3-pointers and 75 percent (12-16) from the charity stripe. The Cougars lost the rebound battle 44-31, including 16-6 on the offensive glass, but won the turnover battle 12-5.
Junior guard
Savannah Camp led CSUSM with 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Senior guard
Ashley Jenkins pitched in 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. Junior forward
Lupe Cruz had three blocks. Donae Moguel led the Gators with 17 points and 20 rebounds.
The two teams were nearly even in the first half as SF State led 35-34 at halftime. The Cougars went 11-of-30, while the Gators shot 13-of-36 in the first two quarters.
SF State kept its one-point advantage after the third quarter, 52-51, as both teams scored 17 points in the period.
CSUSM used a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter. The Cougars took the lead and never trailed after that. CSUSM extended its lead to 10 points, 69-59, with less than two minutes remaining. The margin was ultimately insurmountable for the Gators as CSUSM prevailed by eight points.
The Cougars will have a day off before hosting Sonoma State on Saturday, Jan. 28. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
