Cougars Welcome Cal Poly Pomona Thursday, Humboldt State Saturday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team will host a pair of conference games this week. The Cougars will welcome Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Jan. 12 and Humboldt State on Saturday, Jan. 14. Both games are set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
  • CSUSM erased a 14-point halftime deficit and defeated Cal State East Bay 109-108 in double overtime. Ethan Alvano put away a game-high 36 points to lead the Cougars.
  • CSUSM took down Cal State Monterey Bay 77-66 on the road. Joe Boyd narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. 
  • CSUSM is third in the CCAA in scoring offense, averaging 79.1 points per game. The Cougars lead the conference in field goal percentage at .490 and three-point percentage at .440.
  • Junior forward Joe Boyd leads the conference in rebounding at 10.6 per game. He is second in field goal percentage, nailing 58.8 percent (87-148) of his shots. 
  • Senior guard Tyson Kygar ranks first in the CCAA with a .521 3-point field goal percentage. He leads the CCAA with 2.9 treys per game. 
  • Junior guard Josh Spiers is third in the conference with a .494 3-point field goal percentage and fifth in 3-pointers made with 2.5 per game. 
  • Junior guard Ethan Alvano ranks second in the CCAA in scoring at 16.7 points per game. Alvano is fourth in the conference in assists, averaging 4.3 per game.

CAL POLY POMONA BREAKDOWN
  • Cal Poly Pomona is tied for last in the CCAA standings with a 1-7 conference record. 
  • Jeremy Dennis and Jordan Ogundiran are the leading scorers for the Broncos averaging 13.1 and 12.9 points per game. 
  • CSUSM defeated Cal Poly Pomona 83-64 on the road on Dec. 10, the last time the two teams met. 
  • Cal Poly Pomona head coach Greg Kamansky is in his 17th season at the helm.

HUMBOLDT STATE BREAKDOWN
  • Humboldt State is tied for seventh in the CCAA with a 3-5 conference record.
  • The Lumberjacks have four players averaging double figures in Tyras Rattler Jr., Nikhil Lizotte, Malik Morgan and Calvin Young II putting up 13.9, 13.4, 12.1 and 10.1 points per game. 
  • The Cougars fell to HSU 89-78 in Arcata on Nov. 26, the last time the two teams met. 
  • Steve Kinder is in his seventh season as head coach of Humboldt State.

COACH FOSTER FILE
B.J. Foster was named interim head men's basketball coach in the summer of 2016 after three years as the head assistant (2013-16). Foster is 10-5 in his career as a interim head coach.
