SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Freshman
Lauren Perry scored her first collegiate goal and
Yeya Millan added insurance off a penalty kick as the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2016 season, 2-0, over visiting Southern Nazarene (Okla.) on Thursday afternoon at The Cage.
The Cougars (1-0-2) remain unbeaten on the year while SNU (0-2-0) searches for its first win.
"The second half it was back to what we've been expecting from this team. To finally get the result is really nice because I think we've been playing well. I feel good about what we're doing and I'm very confident in this group," said head coach
Bobby Renneisen.
In the 52
nd minute,
Megan Pfrunder played a corner kick to the back post for Perry, who headed it back across the goal and into the top left corner of the net. Pfrunder now has two assists this year, both of the corner kick variety.
With less than four minutes remaining, a SNU defender misplayed a high long ball in her own box and it hit off her hand, giving CSUSM a penalty kick.
Millan stepped up and put it firmly into the bottom left corner.
The Cougars clearly controlled the run of play throughout the game and put forth 10 shots compared to just one for SNU.
CSUSM will take on Cal Baptist this Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in The Cage.
