SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team went ahead in the second half, but couldn't hang on to the lead as the Cougars tied 1-1 with Cal Baptist in non-conference play on Saturday at The Cage.
Megan Pfrunder scored her first goal of the season in the 54
th minute, but CBU's Jordan Dow equalized with 10 minutes remaining. The teams went end-to-end in the overtime session, however, neither could break through.
CSUSM remains unbeaten on the season with a 1-0-3 overall record. CBU moves to 1-2-1.
"These type of games are going to prepare us for our conference play. We need to be stronger and tougher in order to close it out one-nil though," said CSUSM head coach
Bobby Renneisen. "I like the way our team is playing because we're always up for the battle. It was a fair result today."
Pfrunder had a couple of one-on-one opportunities with the goalkeeper early in the match, but sent both shots high over the bar.
Desarae Felix of CBU also had a pair of solid looks. Her first opportunity inside the area went high before CSUSM goalkeeper
Erica Dory made a nice save on Felix to the short post.
Pfrunder finally got the breakthrough she was looking for in the second half.
Karly Dunning played a long ball into the box that was touched on to
Yeya Millan by
Meghan Randig. Millan slid it to the right edge of the six and Pfrunder pounced on it before hitting it inside the right post.
CBU answered in the 81
st. Miranda Martinez floated a ball into the box that was flicked on my Symone Mack. Dow was there to roof the shot to make it 1-1.
Freshman
Alex Sanders nearly scored what would have been a game-winner, finding space on the right side of the 18. However, her shot barely missed the far post.
In the extra session, Dory came out to cut off a one-on-one opportunity with CBU's Chaylin Couzens. The two collided and Dory was forced from the match, but the play likely saved a goal.
Bailey Cockrill came on in her first action as a Cougar and closed out the final 41 seconds of the match.
The Cougars have one more non-conference match remaining next Saturday, September 17 against Fresno Pacific in The Cage. The Cougars begin conference play the following Wednesday, Sept. 21, against UC San Diego at home.
