SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team was moments away from victory, but Humboldt State scored with six seconds remaining to force overtime, as the teams finished 1-1 on Friday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play in The Cage.
Meghan Randig pounded home a rebound after
Kayla Anderson's shot careened off the post to put the Cougars in the lead in the 24
th minute.
Then in the 35
th,
Courtney McLeish scored from close range after a bobble by the HSU goalkeeper on
Elizabeth Maass' free kick, but the Cougars were called offside in a somewhat dubious call.
CSUSM seemed to be cruising with the majority of the play in HSU's end, but the Jacks made a couple late pushes as the Cougars sat back.
In a last ditch effort with the PA announcer counting down the seconds until the full 90, Alex Jenkins dribbled a ball to the corner before looping in a high cross to the back post. Bridget Daley beat her defender to it and headed it past
Erica Dory to make it 1-1.
The Cougars move to 3-1-4 overall and 1-1-1 in CCAA play.
CSUSM doubled the Jacks in shots, 14-7, and forced four saves out of the HSU keeper.
HSU is now 2-7-1, 1-3-1 CCAA.
CSUSM hosts Sonoma State this Sunday starting at 11:30 a.m. in The Cage.
