SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort, but fell short in a 1-0 loss to No. 19 Sonoma State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon in The Cage.
The Cougars outshot the nationally-ranked Seawolves 9-5 and forced three saves out of SSU's Kristen Spear, but SSU took advantage of one of its few opportunities early in the match. Katie Mohr volleyed in Miriam Bloom's corner kick in the ninth minute for the game-winner.
The Cougars drop to 3-2-4 overall and 1-2-1 in CCAA action. SSU improves to 7-2-1, 5-1-0 CCAA.
The Cougars ' best chance to equalize came early in the second half, as
Karly Dunning ripped a shot off a SSU defender from 12 yards out. The ball bounced to
Morgan Simmons, who had another look at goal, but once again a SSU defender got a foot to the ball in front of the open net to deny the chance.
Kayla Anderson had three shots on the afternoon and forced the pressure on the SSU defense throughout the entire match.
Erica Dory made four saves between the pipes for CSUSM.
The Cougars head out on their first CCAA road trip next weekend to take on Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on Friday and San Francisco State on Sunday.
