SAN MARCOS, Calif – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team remained unbeaten after a 0-0 (2 OT) draw in its home opener against Point Loma on Saturday afternoon in The Cage.
In a match played between the boxes, the teams combined for 11 shots and each narrowly missed putting a tally on the board. The game matched the historical trend between the squad, as the last four contests between them have been decided by a goal or less.
"The shutout was nice but it was a little bittersweet. We had some really good opportunities and we needed to finish those," said CSUSM head coach
Bobby Renneisen. "Across the board I think our work ethic is really good, we're generating chances and set pieces. When we get those moments we need to make them count."
CSUSM moves to 0-0-2 overall. PLNU stands 1-0-1.
Megan Pfrunder had the best opportunity of the day to get the Cougars on the board, as she was played a through ball in behind. However, her attempt from the right side to the short post was parried away by Ariel Oriarte.
Early in the second half, PLNU nearly punched in a loose ball, if it weren't for
Holly Isaacs clearing the ball of the line.
Lauren Perry nearly nodded in Pfrunder's corner kick late in the second half, but her driving header sailed a foot over the bar.
CSUSM continues its eight-match home stand this Thursday, Sept. 8 against Southern Nazarene at 1:30 PM. The Cougars then host Cal Baptist, Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m.
