SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team was handed its first loss of the season by 11
th-ranked UC San Diego, 4-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Wednesday afternoon in The Cage.
CCAA leading goal scorer Katie O'Laughlin netted her seventh goal of the young season in the third minute to put the Tritons ahead before UCSD added three second-half scores to put a stamp on the match.
The Cougars drop to 2-1-3 overall and 0-1-0 in CCAA competition. UCSD improves to 5-2-0 and 1-0-0 in CCAA play.
Chances were at a premium for the Cougars throughout the match.
Amy Wilson forced a save out of Itzel Gonzalez in the 15
th minute after
Meghan Randig fired off a solid shot high moments earlier.
Yeya Millan forced herself deep inside the six in the 62
nd minute and tried to volley a long cross from
Lauren Perry, but Gonzalez was equal to it.
"Full credit to UCSD. There's a reason they were picked to win the conference and they're number eleven in the nation. They were the better team today," said CSUSM head coach
Bobby Renneisen. "We know we can play better, we've shown it."
The Cougars take on Chico State, which had previously been ranked in the top 25 last week, on Friday afternoon in CCAA play in The Cage. Kick-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
