CSUSM (0-0-1) gifted CUI (0-0-1) a lead in the 54^th minute by surrendering an own goal off a long throw in.

"This group has a lot of fight in them and I'm excited about where we are headed in the early stages of the season," said head coach Bobby Renneisen.

The Cougars tied in their opening match for the third straight season and went to overtime for the fourth straight year in the season opener.

CSUSM hosts its first home match of the season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. vs. Point Loma.
