SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team was swept on Friday at Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader at San Bernardino Softball Park.
The Cougars fall to 10-34 overall and 7-27 in CCAA play. CSUSB improves to 30-23 overall, 21-17 CCAA.
CSUSM and CSUSB will conclude the regular season with the final two games of their four-game set starting Saturday at noon.
Game 1
The Cougars hit three home runs, their first game with at least three homers since April 14, 2015, but fell in extra innings to the Coyotes, 4-3.
Robyn Alvara went deep twice and
Brogan Hoenisch tagged her first homer of the year.
Hoenisch put the Cougars in the lead in the top of the second inning with a solo bomb.
After CSUSB tied it in the third, Alvara answered with a homerun to center field to make it 2-1.
Jessica Brown's two-run home run put CSUSB back in the lead in the fifth, but Alvara answered with a solo shot to left in the sixth to make it 3-3.
The Coyotes scored the game winner in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Kaylee Gemmell led off with a double and Brown knocked her in with a one-out RBI double.
Ashley Dagenais (6-14) allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four in the loss.
Caylyn Rodriguez and
Holly Fauria went 2-for-3.
Game 2
A nine-run third inning by the Coyotes helped CSUSB jump out to a 10-1 lead in their eventual 12-3, five-inning victory over the Cougars.
Melyssa Bellamy's bunt single drove in Fauria in the top of the third to tie the score 1-1.
However, the Coyotes combined for seven hits, two of them home runs and five total extra-base hits, en route to nine runs in the bottom half of the frame.
CSUSB added two more in the fourth to make it 12-1.
The Cougars attempted to prolong the game with a little rally in the top of the fifth. Rodriguez doubled home
Karla Bernal and Alvara knocked in Rodriguez with a base-hit, but CSUSM fell one run short of extending the contest.
Amanda Horbasch (4-20) struck out two in three innings of work. Dagenais came in and struck out the side in her only inning.
