SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team ended the 2016 season with a pair of losses at Cal State San Bernardino, 4-3 and 13-10, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Saturday afternoon at San Bernardino Softball Park.
CSUSM ends its season with a 10-36 overall record and a 7-29 mark in its first CCAA campaign. CSUSB finishes 32-23 overall, 23-17 CCAA.
Game 1
CSUSM took a 3-2 lead, but a pair of unearned runs by the Coyotes in the bottom of the sixth made the difference in the Cougars' 4-3 game-one loss.
The Cougars trailed 2-0 at the end of five innings, but started the top of the sixth with a pair of singles.
Lindsay Cerulle knocked in pinch-runner
Sara Langdon to tie the game before
Holly Fauria scored on a passed ball and made it 2-2.
Cerulle moved to third on that passed ball and eventually scored on Bellamy's sacrifice fly that made it 3-2 in favor of the Cougars.
CSUSB opened the sixth also with back-to-back singles, and were gifted the first run when Kaylee Gemmell's hit forced an error by CSUSM right-fielder
Robyn Alvara. Pinch runner Arianna Hernandez came in to score on the play to make it 3-3.
The Coyotes loaded the bases and eventually scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Melissa Roberts that drove in Amanda Fitzgerald for the second unearned run of the frame.
The Cougars put the game-tying run on third base in the top of the seventh when
Karla Bernal singled with two outs and Fauria moved her there with a single of her own.
However, Cassandra Williams (20-14) got Cerulle to ground out to third to end the game.
Amanda Horbasch (4-21) allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out three in six innings of work for CSUSM.
Game 2
The Cougars hit three home runs and scored a season-high 10 runs, but it was too little to overtake the hosts in a 13-10 loss to finish off the season.
Robyn Alvara was 3-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI,
Brogan Hoenisch went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double, and
Melyssa Bellamy homered and had two RBI.
Bellamy's RBI infield single put the Cougars in the lead, but CSUSB responded with a three-run second and a run in the third to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Cougars came right back, though, as an RBI single from Alvara and a two-run single by Horbasch pulled the score to 4-4 in the fourth.
CSUSB added two in the bottom half of the frame before putting up a five-spot in the fifth to take an 11-4 advantage.
Bellamy and Alvara hit back-to-back home runs to start the sixth, as a part of a four-run at-bat that pulled CSUSM within 11-8.
Down five heading to the seventh, Hoenisch's two-run home run brought the Cougars within 13-10, but CSUSM could not extend the game.
Horbasch was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Ashley Dagenais (6-15) was dealt the loss.
CSUSM softball thanks seniors
Caylyn Rodriguez, Taylor Ybarra, Bellamy, Alvara and Hoenisch for their years of service to the program.
