ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team fell in overtime, 97-91, to Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena.
Darnell Taylor's layup with one second remaining in regulation tied the score 78-78 to force the extra session, but the Lumberjacks started OT with a 10-1 run to take control of the game and earn the victory.
The Cougars drop to 15-11 overall and 11-8 in CCAA play. Humboldt State improves to 18-8 overall, 12-8 CCAA and clinches a first-round home game in the CCAA Tournament.
The Cougars and Lumberjacks flip-flopped spots in the standings, with the Cougars dropping into a tie for fifth with Cal State Monterey Bay and the Jacks taking fourth. A win by the Cougars on Saturday at No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona would move CSUSM into a fourth-place tie in the regular season conference standings.
Andrew Bournes led the Cougars with 19 points, while
Darnell Taylor contributed 18 points and nine rebounds.
HSU was paced by 24 points by Malik Morgan and 19 apiece from Rakim Brown and Thomas Witzel.
The Cougars outshot the Jacks 47.0 percent to 42.5 percent, but the Jacks took advantage of 19 offensive rebounds for 20 second-chance points. The Cougars were limited to just 10 second-chance points.
CSUSM is 1-3 in overtime games this season. CSUSM and HSU went to OT in their first meeting on Dec. 5, 2015 – an 84-79 Cougar victory.
CSUSM and CPP tip-off in the regular-season finale at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night at Kellogg Gym.
