CSUSM Swept in First CCAA Road Doubleheader

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team fell in both ends of its first road California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader, 3-2 and 11-1 (5 inn.), to Stanislaus State on Friday afternoon at Warrior Softball Field.

The Cougars drop to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in CCAA competition. Stan St. improves to 5-6, 2-4 CCAA.

CSUSM and Stan St. will play the final two games of their four-game series on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Game 1
Stan St. earned its first conference victory of 2016 in walk-off fashion, taking down the Cougars 3-2 in game one.

The Cougars took advantage of three Warrior errors in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead, but Katelyn McDonald evened the score in the fifth with a two-out RBI single up the middle.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stan St.'s Alexus Martinez came aboard with an infield single before Nicolette Vizcaino put runners on first and second with a one-out bunt single. McDonald then singled and Martinez came around to score due to a throwing error by CSUSM right-fielder Lindsay Cerulle.

Amanda Horbasch (3-5) earned the loss after allowing five hits and a pair of earned runs in 6.1 innings. Kiley Ragsdale (3-5) earned the victory by allowing three hits and no earned runs in a complete-game effort.

Game 2
CSUSM allowed eight runs in the third inning as Stan St. coasted to a five-inning, 11-1 win in game two.

Caylyn Rodriguez's RBI triple in the top of the third inning evened the score at 1-1, but the Warriors answered in their turn at-bat.

The first eight batters reached safely, and CSUSM starter Ashley Dagenais (1-5) was replaced by Horbasch in the circle after an RBI single by Melissa Ortiz that made it 4-1.

Horbasch didn't fare much better, as she walked her first batter to push another run across before a two-run double from Morgan Balestreri pushed the Warrior lead to six. Two more would score and the Cougars left the frame down 9-1.

RBI singles from Balestreri and Martinez put the Warriors up 11-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

CSUSM went down in order in the top of the fifth.
