SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Four different Cougars scored in double figures as the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team defeated Life Pacific by a final score of 83-52 in a non-conference matchup, Wednesday at The Sports Center.
CSUSM improves to an overall record of 6-3 with the win. The Warriors drop to 5-5 with the loss.
Junior forward
Cody Johnson led the Cougars with season-highs in points and rebounds going for 17 and 11, respectively. It is the first double-double of the season for Johnson. Junior forward
Joe Boyd also recorded a double-double, his second straight and fifth overall of the season, with 14 points and 11 boards. Junior guard
Josh Spiers scored 12 points and junior guard
Ethan Alvano contributed everywhere he could with 10 points, five rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
The Cougars shot 54.2 percent (32-59) from the field and limited LPU to 35.1 percent (20-57) shooting. CSUSM used its size and won the rebound battle 46-21 and outscored the Warriors 42-18 in the paint.
Ramez Michail was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.
CSUSM led by as much as 14 points, on two different occasions, in the first half aided by 57.1 shooting percentage (16-28) that included four three-pointers. The Cougars went into halftime with a 39-26 lead thanks to Johnson's 10 points.
LPU cut the margin to seven points, 45-38, in the second half. It would be the closest the Warriors would get as CSUSM finished the game strong on a 38-14 run to account for the final score.
The Cougars will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Saturday, Dec. 10 with a road matchup against Cal Poly Pomona. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
