Cougars Clinch 67-64 Overtime CCAA Victory at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – Junior Kaitlyn Reina's clutch free throws with eight seconds remaining in overtime secured the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team's 67-64 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night in Kellogg Arena.

The Cougars improve to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference action while the Broncos (4-5, 2-1 CCAA) suffered their first conference loss of the season.

"When you're building a program, these are the game-changing wins that earn your players respect and your school respect," said CSUSM head coach Renee Jimenez. "Our kids are doing a great job understanding how every game in the CCAA is important to making the NCAA tournament.  Pomona is always a tough team in the West Region and I think we are believing that we can play with anyone."

Four Cougars reached double digits with junior forward Savannah Camp leading the way with 12 points. Senior guards Dee Armenta and Ashley Jenkins each chipped in 11 points. Junior forward Lupe Cruz tallied 10 points and six rebounds.

The Cougars trailed 27-20 at the break after shooting just 25.8 percent from the field. Both teams shot 36.9 percent in the second half with the difference coming at the free throw line. CSUSM sunk 15-of-17 at the charity stripe while the Broncos made 9-of-11.

A jumper by junior Raegan Lillie evened the game at 55-55 with 34 seconds remaining in regulation. The CSUSM defense forced three-missed shots by the Broncos as the clock ran out.

After an opening layup by CPP's Jordy Shane, the Cougars went on a seven-point run with two layups by Lupe and Camp's 3-point bucket put CSUSM up 62-57. The Cougars never relinquished the lead, clutching CSUSM's second conference road victory of the season.

The Cougars take a break from CCAA play to host St. Martin's on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.
