ARCATA, Calif. – Stellar free-throw shooting boosted the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team to a 65-51 win over Humboldt State to open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference play on Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena.
CSUSM shot 88.2 percent (15-of-17) from the line, while the Lumberjacks hit on 54.5 percent (6-of-11).
With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in CCAA action. HSU drops to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Savannah Camp scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including a 3-of-6 performance from behind the arc, to pace the Cougar scoring attack.
Ashley Jenkins added 15 points, five assists and five rebounds, while
Monica Friedl scored eight points and had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Cougars fell behind early, trailing by nine with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter but closed the gap to 14-8 at the first break. HSU held the lead for much of the second quarter until Camp hit the second of back-to-back 3-pointers to give CSUSM a 32-30 lead with 1:04 remaining in the half.
Camp scored all 19 of her points in the first half to give the Cougars a four-point advantage heading into the locker room.
Jenkins scored 10 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer at the 2:20 mark of the third quarter that pushed the Cougar lead to 10 points. CSUSM held a double-digit advantage the rest of the way, building the lead to 18 points with 4:22 remaining in the game.
CSUSM won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Lumberjacks 36-29.
Teylor McMiller led the Lumberjacks with 14 points and Kindall Murie had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Cougars are back in action on Friday, Nov. 25 when they face Azusa Pacific at the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
