SAN MARCOS, Calif. – It took six years for the Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team to play its first true home game. When it finally did, there was no doubt from the get go whose house it was.
Four Cougars finished in double digits to help CSUSM cruise 93-68 over visiting Redlands in the first-ever game in The Sports Center on campus at CSUSM.
The Cougars officially christened the building Tuesday night following five seasons of playing their "home" games at local MiraCosta College. CSUSM went 47-9 at their old friendly confines of MiraCosta, but is now 1-0 in its true home.
Joe Boyd scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting,
Josh Spiers hit five 3-pointers on his way to a 17-point night,
Ethan Alvano tallied 14 and
Tyson Kygar added 13.
CSUSM shot over 50-percent for the second straight game, registering a 51.9-percent (33-of-64) clip from the field and a 45.8-percent (11-of-24) mark from behind the arc.
Boyd's 17 points in the first half helped the Cougars to a nine-point advantage at the break. The Cougars essentially put the game away with a 21-4 spurt to start the second stanza.
Redlands pulled within 13 with 5:38 remaining and forced a CSUSM timeout, but the Cougars responded with a 10-3 run to keep the game in hand.
The Cougars head to Azusa Pacific on Saturday, November 19 to tip-off against APU at 7:30 p.m.
