CSUSM's Unbeaten Run Squashed by Sonoma State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team's four-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Sunday via a 2-1 loss to visiting Sonoma State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon in The Cage.

Bryan Morrison put the Cougars ahead in the first half, but SSU snatched back the lead with two early goals in the second stanza before holding on for the one-goal victory.

The loss drops the Cougars to 3-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 CCAA. SSU improves to 4-2-4, 4-1-1 CCAA.

Morrison added his third goal of the season thanks to solid team defense deep in the Seawolves' end. Morrison and JJ Castillo trapped SSU's central defensive midfielder in the middle of the SSU end and forced a turnover. Castillo flipped it behind the back line to Morrison, who caught SSU goalkeeper Mitch North off his line, and chipped it below the bar from about 30 yards out.

CSUSM goalkeeper Just Tesar was the star of the show in the first half for the Cougars, tallying seven saves and denying a trio of dangerous scoring opportunities by SSU. He had back-to-back saves on Maury Lopez and Evan Roehrig in the 21st minute, before making another double-save on Andrew Ogilvy and Luis Mendoza in the 33rd.

In the 42nd, Tesar stonewalled a volley from Raad Aljabi inside the six to preserve a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

However, the levee broke early in the second frame.

Victor Gonzalez was called for a foul inside the box when Alek Cucuk went down lightly after cutting back inside. Eric Alvarado was true from the spot, placing a shot inside the right post to make it 1-1 in the 47th minute.

Six minutes later, Gabe D'Ambrosio played a hard, low cross inside of the six from the left flank and Roehrig was there to pound the service past a helpless Tesar to make it 2-1.

The second half was marred by the distribution of nine cards. The Oprah Winfrey-like handing out of yellows and reds resulted in both squads finishing the match with 10 men apiece. 11 cards were dealt in the match.

CSUSM nearly equalized in the 67th minute on Morrison's looping shot from the left side, but SSU was saved by the crossbar.

With two minutes remaining, Jacob Cintas curled a free kick into the box. Unfortunately, the Cougars could not get a good look despite the ball fluttering on the ground near the penalty spot.

CSUSM hits the road next weekend for its first CCAA road trip. The Cougars take on Cal State Monterey Bay Friday before heading to San Francisco State on Sunday.
