CSUSM Prevails in OT, Secures Six Points in CCAA Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Yeya Millan converted a penalty kick in the first overtime period to lift the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team to a 2-1 (OT) victory over Cal State L.A. in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon in The Cage.

The win earned CSUSM six points on the weekend following its 1-0 win on Friday over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the first time the Cougars had secured back-to-back victories in a single weekend of CCAA action.

CSUSM improves to 6-3-4 overall and 4-3-1 in CCAA play. After starting the week in eighth place in the CCAA standings, CSUSM jumped into a tie for sixth with Cal Poly Pomona on 13 points. The Cougars sit nine points behind first-place UC San Diego.

Millan, a senior who was honored in the Senior Day ceremony along with five of her teammates, stepped up to the spot after CSULA was called for a handball during a scrum in the box. She slotted her shot low and to the left for her team-leading third goal of the season.

Kayla Anderson put the Cougars on the board in the 52nd minute with her second goal of the season. Morgan Simmons chipped a ball out wide for Courtney McLeish, who whipped a cross inside the six from the left flank. Anderson met it at the back post and volleyed it into the top right corner.

A goal in the 84th minute by Anahie Duran forced the extra session. Adyson Willett flicked a long ball in behind the Cougar back line to the feet of Duran. CSUSM goalkeeper Erica Dory gambled off her line, and Duran cleverly chipped the ball over Dory's head and into an open goal from 30 yards out.

The Cougars outshot the Golden Eagles 11-5 on the afternoon and earned seven corner kicks as opposed to two.

McLeish tallied four points over the weekend, notching the game-winner in the win over CSUDH.

Millan, Dory, Brie Jones, Sydney Hernandez and Lauren Rivero were honored for their years of service to the women's soccer program prior to the match.

CSUSM has four CCAA matches remaining in the regular season, all of which will be on the road. The Cougars travel to play Cal State East Bay and Stanislaus State next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
