HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team beat Cal State East Bay handily, 85-69, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday night.
The Cougars improve to 11-6 overall and 8-3 in CCAA play. CSUEB drops to 7-13, 3-10 CCAA.
Taran Brown hit six of his nine 3-point attempts and finished with a game-high 23 points, his highest output since Nov. 28.
Declan Daly, the CCAA's leading rebounder, logged a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds while dishing out a game-high four assists.
Darnell Taylor scored 13 points and
Akachi Okugo added 12.
The Cougars shot 50.9-percent (28-of-55) as a team and 50-percent (9-of-18) from behind the arc. It was their third time making over half their shots this season and the first game over 50-percent since Dec. 31.
CSUSM led by two at the break, but used a 17-9 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take a double-digit lead. Brown contributed 11 points within that span.
CSUEB was twice able to whittle the deficit to three points, but Brown answered each close call with a bucket at the other end.
The Pioneers got within five at the four-minute mark, but Okugo drained a 3-pointer before Taylor got loose on a fast break for an easy basket.
The Cougars limited the Pioneers to one field goal over the final 4:05.
CSUSM shot 57.44-percent in the second half, vastly improving their 44.4-percent first-half clip.
Jack Pasquini had 14 points for the Pioneers.
The Cougars head to Cal State Monterey Bay to take on the Otters on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in The Kelp Bed.
