SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team suffered a 97-65 defeat at the hands of Cal State Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Saturday afternoon at The Kelp Bed.
The 32-point loss is the largest in the five-year history of the program, seven points more than the 25-point loss the Cougars suffered against Life (Ga.) (90-65) on Mar. 4, 2012.
CSUSM drops to 11-7 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA. CSUSM remains in fourth place in the CCAA standings.
CSUMB improves to 9-10 overall and 7-6 in the CCAA.
Darnell Taylor led the Cougars with 20 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Tanner Waldrip had 14 points, his highest-scoring output since Jan. 11.
Declan Daly pulled down 10 rebounds with a pair of blocks.
Evan Zeller scored a game-high 24 points for the Otters.
The Otters held the Cougars to a season-low 36.8-percent shooting on the afternoon. CSUMB shot 44.7-percent from the 3-point line and limited CSUSM to a 5-of-23 clip (21.7-percent) from long range.
CSUMB led by 14 at the break, 42-28, and started the second stanza on an 11-2 run that pushed the lead to 23.
The Cougars fell behind by 30 by the 11:22 mark and trailed by as many as 37 late in the game.
CSUSM will look to rebound at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. next week.
