OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team outscored Stanislaus State 13-2 over the final 5:57 in a 64-50 victory on Saturday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at MiraCosta College.
The Cougars led by 13 at halftime, but Stan St. was able to pull within three with 6:18 to play. However
Taran Brown's two-handed jam on the Cougars' next possession sparked a 9-0 run that pushed the Cougar lead back to 12.
Stan St.'s final bucket came with 2:12 to play while the Cougars iced the game at the charity stripe.
The Cougars improve to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in CCAA play. As of Saturday night, CSUSM is in fourth place in the conference standings, a spot lower than they started the week, due in part to Thursday's loss against Chico State.
Stanislaus State dropped to 5-11 overall, 4-7 CCAA.
Akachi Okugo led all scorers with 20 points, while
Darnell Taylor tallied a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. CSUSM scored 20 points of f15 Warrior turnovers.
Christian Bayne had 12 points for the Warriors.
The Cougars closed the first half with a 13-2 run over the final 8:02 to take a 35-22 lead into halftime.
CSUSM will travel to Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay next week.
