Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 19 Chico State Too Much Down the Stretch for CSUSM

OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped by No. 19 Chico State, 83-73, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday night at MiraCosta College.

CSUSM (9-6, 6-3 CCAA) entered the night with a chance to take second place in the conference standings with a victory, but CSUC (15-3, 9-2) kept the Cougars at bay and held on to first place thanks in part to a 7-of-9 shooting clip from behind the arc in the second half.

Tied 30-30 at the break, the Wildcats jumped out to a 46-36 advantage with a 16-6 run to start the second stanza. However, the Cougars battled back and eventually tied the game 61-61 on Collin Host's tough lay-up at the 5:55 mark.

Devin Koeplin's free throw gave the Cougars a 64-63 lead, but the Wildcats rattled off 11 consecutive points, including a pair of treys from Corey Silverstrom to push their lead to 10 with 1:24 remaining.

Silverstrom scored 21 in the second half and led the Wildcats with 27 points. All five CSUC starters finished in double digits.

Darnell Taylor matched Silverstom's game-high 27 points while Host added 10.

CSUSM went just 2-of-20 from behind the arc and finished the game with a 44.1 shooting percentage.

The 10-point loss is the largest margin of defeat for the Cougars since Feb. 13, 2015 at Northern New Mexico.

CSUSM will look to right the ship on Saturday night at home vs. Stanislaus State at 8 p.m.
