SANTEE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team went ahead early, but a goal in the 86
th minute by San Diego Christian spoiled the Cougars' NCAA Division II debut as the teams drew, 1-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Santee Sportsplex.
Senior captain
Natalie Lara put the Cougars on the front foot when she headed in
Sarah Campbell's long throw in in the 15
th minute. However, SDCC answered less than four minutes from full-time in a similar fashion, as Jasmine Swindler finished off Samantha Schmidt's long throw.
The Cougars move to 0-0-1 on the season. The Hawks remain 2-0 after playing the contest as an exhibition.
Freshman
Allie Jara played all 110 minutes for the Cougars between the pipes and saved four of the seven shots she faced.
Brenda Barniga,
Emily Haugen, Lara and Campbell had two shots apiece.
The Cougars outshot the Hawks, 13-6, and earned nine corner kicks as opposed to one for SDCC.

CSUSM is 6-2-2 all-time in season openers.

Bobby Renneisen's squad heads to NAIA-ranked No. 22 Biola (2-0-1) on Saturday to take on the Eagles in La Mirada at 4:30 p.m.
CSUSM's home opener is next Wednesday, September 9 at 4 p.m. against Concordia (Calif.) at The Cougar Den.
