Late Penalty Kick Trips Up CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A late penalty kick doomed the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team in its 1-0 loss to Cal State East Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon at The Cougar Den.

Moments from extra time, Andrew Stalboerger was called for a foul on CSUEB's Jeremy Romero inside the penalty box in the 89th minute. Romero chose to take the penalty he earned and promptly sent it inside the right post.

The loss drops the Cougars to 3-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in CCAA play. CSUEB improves to 2-6, 1-3 CCAA.

"We got what we deserved today. It was a pretty uninspired performance and a big disappointment for us not being able to follow up on Friday's result," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "We're trying to get better, deeper and stronger to handle the Friday-Sunday demand. But East Bay earned it, they wanted it more and they deserved it."

The loss comes as a contrast to Friday's match, one in which CSUSM handily shutout previously-undefeated Stanislaus State, 3-0. CSUEB had yet to win a conference match and was picked to finish last in the CCAA along with CSUSM in the preseason coaches' poll.

The Cougars were outshot, 12-8, and were able to put just a pair of chances on-frame. Although CSUSM was able to keep a good chunk of the possession, the squad struggled to create inside the final third throughout the contest.

CSUSM hits the road next weekend for its first away CCAA contests in program history. The Cougars take on Cal State L.A. on Friday, Oct. 2 before heading to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday, Oct. 4.
