LOS ANGELES – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team fell to Cal State L.A., 1-0, in the Cougars' first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road game on Friday evening at Jesse Owens Track.
CSULA's Joshua Cortez scored the game's only goal on a counter attack in the 58
th minute, sending the Eagles to 6-1-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the CCAA.
CSUSM dropped its second straight match and moved to 3-4-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the CCAA.
"I thought we played very well and I believe our guys deserved more than they got from the game. We handled the ball well from back to front, but we were just unable to find room in their final third to play in," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "[Cal State] L.A.'s back four were real sturdy and they proved that they're hard to score against. I think their pace, power and experience was the difference in the game."
Zach Sheppard made his first start in between the pipes for CSUSM this season and tallied seven saves.
Louie Farfan registered four shots, but the Cougars as a squad were able to muster just three on-frame.
Pulvers relayed that the goal came against the run of play, as Kaan Gultoprak pushed the ball up the field off a take-away. He found Tobias Toubrant, who flicked it to Cortez at the six. Cortez finished from the wide-angle to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.
The Cougars turn around to face No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
