SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team scored twice in the second half en route to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon at The Cougar Den.
The victory marks the Cougars' first as a NCAA Division II competitor and it is their inaugural win in the CCAA. CSUSM improves to 1-2-3 overall, 1-0-1 CCAA. After a tie on Friday against Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA opener, CSUSM sits in a tie for second in the conference standings with four points.
In addition, it was the first win in the CCAA for any CSUSM team.
CPP drops to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Natalie Lara tied things up in the 59
th minute before a header from
Paulina Good in the 69
th minute put the Cougars in the lead for good.
The Cougars came out on the front foot and had three quality looks at goal in the early moments, but CPP would be the first to score on its first dangerous opportunity. Megan Kisslan played a long through ball for Amanda Gomez, who slotted it inside the far post to make it 1-0 in the 19
th minute.
The CPP goalkeeper did well to keep the Cougars off the score sheet, stonewalling a point-blank attempt from
Sarah Campbell and a try from Lara.
However, CSUSM broke through in the second half. Off
Sarah Campbell's long throw,
Emily Haugen flicked up a ball for Lara inside the area, allowing the senior to place the goal low and to the keeper's left.
10 minutes later,
Jenna Hernandez played a looping corner kick to the back post. Good, the Cougars' leading goal scorer a year ago, leapt to meet it and sent it back across goal and inside the far post to make it 2-1. It was her first goal this season.
CSUSM outshot CPP 12-3.
The Cougars will host Stanislaus State and Cal State East Bay in CCAA play next weekend at The Cougar Den.
