Cougars Earn Point in CCAA Debut

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team came away with a point in its inaugural match in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), drawing 1-1 (2OT) with visiting Cal State San Bernardino at The Cougar Den on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars are still looking for their first win, but move to 0-2-3 overall and 0-0-1 in CCAA play. CSUSB leaves San Marcos at 1-3-2 overall, 0-0-1 CCAA.

"I thought it was the best game we've played all year. Yes, it was a little disappointing not getting the result, but points in this conference are really hard to come by," said CSUSM head coach Bobby Renneisen. "It's a positive for not only our belief, but our growth as a team moving forward. It was a really valuable experience and I'm really proud of the team."

Redshirt freshman Amy Wilson opened her CSUSM scoring account in the 39th minute after coming on moments earlier. Fellow sub Karly Dunning played Wilson long to the top of the box before Wilson turned her defender and pounded it inside the right post.

The Cougars held the lead until the Coyotes took advantage of an innocuous corner kick in the 64th minute. Kiersten Miller played a driven ball to the spot for Melanie Aguayo who one-time scissor-kicked it into the top of the net.

The Cougars had an opportunity to steal a goal late. Natalie Lara freed herself inside the left side of the box and tried to go far post. However, Emily Whyte made a diving save to keep the game tied.

The Cougars turn around to face Cal Poly Pomona in another CCAA match this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at The Cougar Den.
