SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team took an early lead, but two late scores from Cal State San Bernardino helped the Coyotes prevail, 2-1 (OT), in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday afternoon at The Cougar Den.
CSUSM drops to 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in CCAA play. CSUSB improves to 3-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 CCAA.
The Cougars led for over 70 minutes against a 10-man Coyote squad, however, CSUSB was able to crack CSUSM's hope for a win in the Cougars' CCAA debut.
Luca Falcone tied the match in the 81
st minute and the Coyotes could have ended it in regulation if not for a head's up save from CSUSM goalkeeper
Landon Sherwood on Chris Lavery's one-on-one opportunity.
Three minutes into the first overtime, CSUSB's Tony Lo intercepted a poor back pass from
Clayton Gannaway to Sherwood. Lo, the Coyotes' leading goal scorer, popped it over the head of Sherwood and into the net to end the game.
"We were introduced to what it is going to be like in conference today and now we know the challenge that we face," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "It's disappointing not to come away with at least a point, but we have to turn around and prepare for a really tough opponent in Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday."
In the eighth minute,
Zach Olow was tugged down in the box and the Cougars were gifted a penalty kick.
Louie Farfan stepped up to take the spot kick and buried it to make it 1-0.
The goal seemed irrelevant considering what had happened moments earlier.
CSUSB defender Dylan Murphy was ejected with a straight red card after going in for a high tackle on CSUSM midfielder
Danny Guzman. Guzman was severely injured on the play and the game was delayed for several minutes as emergency personnel attended to him.
"The game is what it is, but our team's focus now is on
Danny Guzman. He's at the hospital right now with a really bad injury and we're all thinking about him," said Pulvers.
The Cougars host Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Cougar Den.
