SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team went ahead early, but could not come away with a victory despite being two men up on Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sunday afternoon at The Cougar Den.
Louie Farfan put the Cougars ahead in the ninth minute, but CPP equalized just after the break and held off CSUSM despite being reduced to nine men from the 76
th minute on.
The tie moves the Cougars to 2-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in CCAA play. Despite the disappointment in not earning the full three points, the draw will stand as the first point that CSUSM has secured in its short tenure in the CCAA.
CPP moves to 3-1-2 overall and 0-1-1 in CCAA competition.
In the game's opening minutes,
Zach Olow played a long ball over the back of the CPP central defense intended for
Eddie Guerra. Guerra got position on his defender and was clipped from behind to earn a free kick from just outside the area.
Louie Farfan stepped up to take the spot kick and the junior center-mid buried it inside the right post to make it 1-0 Cougars.
CPP evened in the 51
st, as Michael Torres found Christian Gonzalez-Diaz for an open header from the top of the six-yard box.
The Cougars went a man up in the 59
th minute when Mathew Perez was handed his second yellow card of the match. A goal then seemed like it would be a given for CSUSM when CPP's Alexander Turkson was given a straight read card for striking a CSUSM player in the head.
However, the task of scoring proved greater than it seemed. CPP did well to absorb the Cougars' pressure and allowed CSUSM to make unforced errors as the heat took a toll late in the game.
CSUSM's best chance came late in the match, as
Yuki Hata found
Luka Stevanovic at the back post midway through the second overtime, but Stevanovic's header careened off the post and out of danger.
The Cougars host Stanislaus State and Cal State East Bay in CCAA play next weekend at The Cougar Den.
