IRVINE, Calif. – Robyn Alvara's three-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning of game two helped the No. 11 Cal State San Marcos softball team snap a four-game losing streak, as the Cougars defeated No. 3 Concordia 5-4 after a 9-2 loss in game one on Tuesday afternoon at CU Field.
A six-run fourth inning spelled doom for CSUSM in the opening affair, but the Cougars were able to stay within striking distance and eventually handed CUI hurler BethAnn McCann (9-1) her first loss of the season.
The Cougars move to 23-10 overall while the Eagles are now 37-5.
In game two, CSUSM led 2-1 early on thanks to a RBI double from
Caylyn Rodriguez and a RBI single from
Naomi Amu in the third inning. However, a two-run home run by Ryann Ferguson and a RBI base hit from Charlotte Foster put CUI back in the lead, 4-2, in the fifth.
In the sixth, Amu singled with one out and the Cougars were gifted another base runner when
Olivia Lucatuorto reached on an error by the second baseman.
Alvara, who came into the at-bat in a 2-for-16 slump over the past six games, launched McCann's 2-0 pitch over the left-field wall to put the Cougars on top, 5-4. It was her fourth homer of the season, the second-most on the team.
The Eagles were able to place the first two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an error and a single.
Katie Wilkinson (10-3) forced a fly out for the first out of the inning, and then struck out Hannah Howell. However, the runners advanced to second and third on Howell's strikeout.
With the tying run 90 feet away and the winning run 180 feet away, Wilkinson got Mckenna Kilgore to line out to
Brogan Hoenisch at first base to end the game.
Wilkinson earned the victory after 4.2 innings of relief, coming into the circle to replace Amu in the third inning. Wilkinson struck out three while allowing three hits, one walk and a single earned run.
In game one, Amu's two-run single made it 2-2 in the third inning, but the Eagles were able to get to CSUSM starter
Ashley Dagenais (11-6) in the fourth.
Ferguson had a solo homer in the frame before Foster opened the game up with a two-out grand slam.
Amu went 4-for-6 with three RBI on the day.
The Cougars head to Fullerton tomorrow to take on Hope International at 2 p.m.
