Two Walk-offs and a No-hitter, Not a Bad Day for CSUSM Softball

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Olivia Lucatuorto and Brogan Hoenisch hit walk-off homeruns and Ashley Dagenais threw the ninth no-hitter in program history as No. 12 Cal State San Marcos defeated Hope International, 10-1 (5 innings) and 8-0 (5 innings), on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field.

Lucatuorto ended game one with a shot to left center and Hoenisch ended game two with a homer to right center. Dagenais worked the entire second game, striking out four while not allowing a hit. It marked CSUSM's first no-hitter by one pitcher since Katie Wilkinson accomplished the feat on Mar. 22, 2012 vs. St. Gregory's.

CSUSM has won nine straight games and now stands 12-3 overall. The Cougars will host two more doubleheaders this week against Adelphi (Friday, 1 pm) and San Diego Christian (Saturday, 12 pm).

Game 1
CSUSM scored eight runs in its final two at-bats and Lucatuorto hit a walk-off two-run homerun as the Cougars run-ruled Hope International, 10-1, in five innings in game one.

Katie Wilkinson (6-1) delivered a standout performance, earning the victory while allowing just two hits, an earned run, and striking out a pair.

The Royals put one up in their first at-bat, but CSUSM was quick to respond. After Lindsay Cerulle drew a leadoff walk, Lucatuorto hit a ball off the top of fence, a mere six inches from a home run, but settled for an RBI double.

Robyn Alvara then brought Lucatuorto across with a two-out RBI single up the middle that made it 2-1.

CSUSM had a chance to break it open in the third inning when the Cougars loaded the bases with two out. However, Kayla Klein (0-3) got Tayler Ybarra to strike out swinging to end the threat.

The Cougars would have no trouble scoring in the fourth. Caylyn Rodriguez led off with a single up the middle before Cerulle laid down a bunt single. Rodriguez took third on the play when she noticed it wasn't covered, and Cerulle took second on the throw.

Lucatuorto then lifted a listless pop-fly to right, but the right fielder couldn't make the easy play, allowing the ball to drop and Rodriguez to score to make it 3-1.

Melyssa Bellamy's groundout to the right side brought home Cerulle before Naomi Amu launched her sixth home run in her last seven games, a two-run shot over the left-field fence.

The next batter, Alvara, followed suit by sending a solo homerun the opposite way to right center to make it 7-1.

Rodriguez started the bottom of the fifth with a single, her last of a 3-for-3 game. Cerulle laid down another bunt, and the throw to first was way wide, allowing Rodriguez to score all the way from first.

Lucatuorto then sent a ball over the fence in left-center to end the game, 10-1. She had four RBI in the contest.

Game 2
Hoenisch was 2-for-3 with three RBI, Lucatuorto went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Dagenais put together a sterling pitching performance as the Cougars captured their ninth consecutive win.

An error in the second inning by the Cougars looked like it might result in a run for HIU, but Dagenais got Allison Lesan swinging with runners on first and third to end the threat. From there, Dagenais did not allow another base runner and finished her day with four strikeouts and no walks.

RBI singles from Amu, Hoenisch and Devin Vanderhoff pushed CSUSM ahead, 3-0, in the bottom of the third.

Cerulle and Rodriguez singled with one-out in the fourth. After Cerulle was granted second base, Lucatuorto sent a hard single up the middle to drive in Cerulle and Rodriguez.

However, the ball squirted under the glove of the center fielder and Lucatuorto came all the way around for a pseudo inside-the-park homerun. CSUSM led 6-0.

Dagenais made quick work of HIU in the top of the fifth, and Hoenisch promptly ended the game in the bottom half.

Alvara drew a leadoff walk and Hoenisch nearly took out the scoreboard in right center with her first home run of the season.

Hoenisch was 3-for-5 on the afternoon. Vanderhoff went 2-for-2 in game two.
