CSUSM Ups Win-streak to 11 Games with Doubleheader Sweep of Adelphi

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team increased its winning streak to 11 with victories of 3-2 and 6-1 over visiting Adelphi University on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field.

Olivia Lucatuorto knocked home Caylyn Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh of game one to give CSUSM a walk-off victory before the Cougars used a six-run fifth inning in game two to seal the win.

The Cougars improve to 14-3 overall. Adelphi, an NCAA Division II institution from the Northeast-10 Conference, drops to 0-8.

Game 1
Lucatuorto delivered a walk-off hit for the second time in the last three games, doubling home Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh inning to provide the difference in CSUSM's 3-2 victory.

After Adelphi tied the game at 2-2 in the top-half of the seventh on an error by the Cougars, Rodriguez rejuvenated the Cougars with a one-out double off the centerfield fence. She moved to third on a groundout from Lindsay Cerulle, and scored easily on Lucatuorto's line drive.

Ashley Dagenais (7-2) earned the victory for CSUSM, working a complete game while allowing six hits and three walks. She struck out a pair.

Melyssa Bellamy put the Cougars on the board in the first, doubling off the left-center field wall to bring home Cerulle and make it 1-0.

Adelphi used a pair of infield singles to put runners on first and third in the third inning and the Panthers tied things, 1-1, on Victoria Wink's sacrifice fly.

Right-hander Jasmine Ennabe settled in for Adelphi, retiring the Cougars in order between the third and fifth innings.

Dagenais hit a pair of batters in the top of the fifth to put runners on first and second with one out and it looked like the Cougars would be in danger with the 3-4-5 hitters coming up.

But, Dagenais got Wink to hit a sharp groundball to Sarah Quiambao at third, and Quiambao calmly stepped on her bag before flipping it across the diamond for an inning-ending double-play.

It was déjà vu for the Cougars in the top of the sixth, as runners came aboard via a hit and a walk with one out. This time, Bellamy started a 6-4-3 double play to get the Cougars out of the jam.

Bellamy proceeded to walk on four pitches to lead off the bottom of the sixth, providing CSUSM its first base-runner since the second inning. Ennabe was pulled, giving way for Nicole Camera (0-1).

Holly Fauria pinch-ran for Bellamy and promptly stole second base. She moved to third on Naomi Amu's grounder for the first out of the inning.

Fauria attempted to score on Robyn Alvara's grounder to the third baseman, but Brenna Martini was quick with her throw to home. Fauria was beaten by the throw easily and tagged out, and it appeared as though the Panthers would escape danger.

However, Brogan Hoenisch snapped the Cougars' cold drought, lining Camera's 1-2 pitch off the wall in right-center. Alvara came all the way around from first and Hoenisch settled in with an RBI triple.

Danielle Cutuli's one-out single gave the Panthers life in their final at-bat. She moved to second on a groundout by Krista King before Jordan Catalano came aboard via a two-out walk. Dagenais forced a groundball from Wink that appeared it would end the game, but Bellamy couldn't handle it and it skipped through her legs, allowing Cutuli to score and make it 2-2.

Game 2
Adelphi's Lindsay Maples held the Cougars hitless for this first four innings, but CSUSM exploded for three home runs, four hits and six runs in the bottom of the fifth on its way to a 6-1 victory in game two.

After a stellar defensive play from Devin Vanderhoff kept the Panthers from expanding their 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, Hoenisch led off the bottom half of the frame with a solo homerun to center. It was the first hit given up by Maples to that point.

The Cougars reloaded the bases with two outs on walks to Vanderhoff and Lucatuorto, and a single by Cerulle.

Bellamy then broke the game open with a grand slam to right center that made it 5-1. CSUSM has hit four grand slams so far this season.

The following batter, Naomi Amu, sent a line-drive over the left-centerfield fence for good measure. It marked her seventh home run in her last nine games.

Katie Wilkinson (7-1) earned the victory, allowing five hits and a pair of walks. She's earned five wins in her last five appearances.
