ESPANOLA, N.M. – The No. 1 Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team couldn't pull the rabbit out of the hat this time against Northern New Mexico, as the Eagles handily snapped the Cougars' nine-game winning streak, 86-67, on Saturday night at the NNMC Classic at Eagle Memorial Gymnasium.
CSUSM, which came back from 20-points down with 6:47 remaining to beat NNMC in double-overtime on Jan. 24, shot just 33.3 percent from the field and was outscored 53-34 in the second stanza tonight.
CSUSM drops to 23-3 while the NAIA Division II Eagles improve to 17-11 overall.
Julian Camper led the way with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and four Cougars finished with 11 points on the night, including
Akachi Okugo,
Taran Brown,
Blake Nash and
Dayton Boddie.
CSUSM finished just 8-of-37 (21.6%) from behind the arc, was outrebounded 41-33 and was outscored 42-24 in the paint.
The teams went into the locker room tied 33-33, but the Eagles jumped out of the break with an 11-5 run that the Cougars could not climb back from.
The Cougars trailed by seven with 4:39 remaining, but were outscored 19-7 the rest of the way.
CSUSM will conclude the NNMC Classic against Johnson & Wales (Colo.) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
