Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team made easy work of The Master's College, 84-65, on Saturday afternoon at Bross Gym.
Darnell Taylor led the way with 14 points,
Taran Brown and
Ben Dickinson each had 13, and
Collin Host added 11. The Cougars scored 24 points off 21 forced TMC turnovers.
Delewis Johnson scored a game-high 23 points for the Mustangs, while JP Lester and Reid Shackleford had 11 and 10 points, respectively. CSUSM held TMC to just 38.5-percent shooting throughout the contest.
The Cougars started the game with a 15-4 run and held off TMC by at least three possessions throughout the opening stanza.
Johnson's layup brought TMC within four, but the Cougars responded with six straight points, all from the free-throw stripe, to take a 38-28 lead into the break.
A 9-2 spurt to start the second half put the Cougars handily in the lead before back-to-back 3-pointers from Brown extended CSUSM's advantage to 62-38 with 11:39 to play.
Andrew Bournes' 3-pointer made the Cougars' advantage 26 points at the 8:36 mark, 71-45, and the Mustangs never pulled closer than 20 points until their final basket with 39 seconds left.
CSUSM has a scrimmage on Wednesday night against News Release Basketball Club at MiraCosta College. The Cougars' 2015-16 officially begins Wednesday, November 18 at Concordia (Calif.).
