Exhibition RecapsCSUSM went 1-1 in its preseason exhibitions against NCAA Division I's San Diego State and the NAIA's The Master's College.
Akachi Okugo went 5-of-8 from behind the arc and led the Cougars with 15 points in an 86-48 loss to SDSU, a game in which the Cougars shot just 36.4% from the field. On Nov. 7 against TMC,
Darnell Taylor led the way with 14 points while
Taran Brown and
Ben Dickinson each added 13 en route to an 84-65 victory. Dickinson and Taylor led the Cougars with a 13.0 PPG scoring average in the two contests. The Cougars will look to improve on their total 35% shooting from the field as the regular season begins.
Concordia Preview
All-time vs. CUI: 4-4
Last Meeting vs. CUI: W, 74-65 (Feb. 7, 2015); Then-No. 1 CSUSM took down then-No. 8 Concordia in last season's NAIA Game of the Week thanks to
Dayton Boddie's 17 points and 13 each from
Julian Camper and
Wade Collie. It marked the fourth straight victory for CSUSM over CUI. The Eagles had beaten the Cougars in the first four matchups between the teams.
CUI Breakdown: The Eagles are off to a solid start in life in NCAA Division II and are coming off a 2-0 weekend at the Dixie State Classic in St. George, Utah. CUI took down Seattle Pacific 68-60 in overtime in the season opener before beating Concordia (Ore.) 72-62 the following night. JT Roach leads the Eagles with a 13.5 PPG scoring average. Stephen Grosey is averaging a double-double with 11.5 PPG and 11.5 RPG.
San Diego Christian Preview
All-time vs. SDCC: 2-1
Last Meeting vs. SDCC: W, 113-80 (Dec. 20, 2013); Six Cougars finished in double figures and CSUSM scored a school-record 113 points in a 43-point triumph over the Hawks at MiraCosta College. De'End Parker led the Cougars with 24 points.
SDCC Breakdown: San Diego Christian went 2-0 at the Antelope Valley Tournament, Nov. 6-7 in Lancaster. SDCC blewout host UAV, 93-67, before edging Benedictine (Ariz.) by two, 70-68. Trevor English and Dalante Dunklin are averaging 16.5 PPG.
The Jim Saia FileJim Saia enters his fifth season at the helm of Cal State San Marcos, a program he has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010. Saia holds a 104-25 (.806) on-court record at CSUSM and a 174-54 (.763) on-court record during his previous seven years as a collegiate head coach. He spent three seasons at Fresno Pacific (2007-10) prior to coming to CSUSM.
New TerritoryAfter four seasons of competition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Cougars enter their first season of NCAA Division II competition in 2015-16. CSUSM is currently in the second year of a three-year transition to full NCAA Division II membership. As a part of the transition, the Cougars will be ineligible for postseason play in 2015 and 2016.
New ConferenceCal State San Marcos is in its first season competing in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The CCAA is made up of 12 CSU institutions and UC San Diego. The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II leagues in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference. CSUSM was picked to finish fifth in the preseason CCAA coaches poll.
